Longline Bra Primer - What You Need to Know

Longline Bra Primer - What You Need to Know

The reason they are gaining popularity has to do with several things. Because a longline bra covers more body area, they effectively disperse "breast weight" which in turn helps with support in your upper body, especially the shoulders and back. Many women believe these bras help with posture as well. Last but not least, the aesthetic value is what most women want - this bra smooths and flattens the stomach region so you look more flattering in clothes. Not bad!

There are many different styles and types of longline bras. Let's examine the most popular and common ones:

  • Strapless Longline Bras - as the name states, this is simply a longline bra without straps (though ironically, many come with detachable straps). This is probably the most practical type - women love these for formal wear such as evening gowns or wedding dresses.
  • Plus Size - these are like most longline bras but are just larger. These often have straps for extra support and have more space available in the stomach areas.
  • Posture Longline Bra - definitely a more functional bra. The posture type will usually have extra support panels in the torso area and unique designs along the bands to pull in the shoulder areas.
  • Lingerie - this style is very popular for fun, sexy wear. You often see lace or sheer fabrics for this type.

There are also many different features that are common to almost all bras. For example, front vs. rear closure, strapped vs. strapless, wire-free designs, athletic or all-cotton fits, etc. If you are looking to purchase one, be sure to know the exact features you need otherwise you can be overwhelmed!

I am sure you know what a longline bra is - just in case, it is a bra that covers much of your torso, almost like a bodice. This type of bra usually extends down to the belly button area or your upper hips - it depends on the specific type. Right now, they are more popular as a lingerie item, but many women utilize them for evening wear or bridal gowns.

A few quick notes on sizing. We recommend you always go to a retailer to be properly fitted. In most cases, you can go with your normal bra sizing. But in some brands, you may need to go one size larger. Also, consider the clothing you will be wearing on top - bring them along if you can. No matter what, make sure the bra is very comfortable - after all it will be covering much of your upper half of the body.

Hopefully this article has given you a good general overview of longline bras and their types and features.
